Artwork by Grace M. in 3rd Grade
I took my third graders to the computer lab to watch a video about Egyptian art on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOUjDIX37o4. This video is part of the documentary series "How Art Made the World." After viewing it, the students watched two additional clips. We focused our examination on ancient Egyptian art, particularly the portraits of Pharaohs and queens.
I often integrate literacy into art lessons, especially for my upper elementary students. An example of this is a project where I use Wallwisher to collect the students' responses.
Here's what some students wrote after viewing the videos
We also looked at Egyptian writings. I found Egyptian hieroglyphic pictures on the internet. I copied it to MS word, then photocopy for each student in the class to look at.
The students practiced writing their names in their sketchbooks. I took a profile photo of each child and printed the photos in black and white.
Next, the students designed their own crowns and jewelry. They wrote their names using hieroglyphics before gluing their crowns on their heads. They also drew lines in the background to add detail to their artwork.
The students really enjoyed this project! I got this idea from Artsonia and Artfactory.com.
