3rd Grade: Egyptian Profile

Artwork by Grace M. in 3rd Grade

I took my 3rd graders to the computer lab to watch a video about Egyptian art on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOUjDIX37o4. It's part of a documentary series, "How Art Made The World." They watched two more video clips after that. We examined the ancient Egyptian art particularly portraits of Pharaohs and queens.

I usually integrate literacy into art especially with my upper elementary level. Below is one of the examples. On this project, I use Wallwisher to record students responses.

Here's what some students wrote after viewing the videos

We also looked at Egyptian writings. I found Egyptian hieroglyphic pictures on the internet. I copied it to MS word, then photocopy for each student in the class to look at.

Students practiced writing their name on their sketch book. I took a picture of each child in a profile view. Printed their pictures on black and white. Then, students designed their crown and jewelries. They wrote their names in hieroglyphic form before gluing their crown on their head. They drew lines on the background. They really enjoyed this project! I borrowed this idea from Artsonia and Artfactory.com
