4th Grade: Stop Motion Animation

The students made a stop motion animation movie. It is a filmmaking technique that makes objects appear to be moving on their own. How to make it work? You place an object in front of a camera and snap a photo. Then move the object a tiny bit at a time and snap another photo. Repeat this process many times.  Next, play back the sequence in rapid progression, and the object creates an illusion of movement. Students exported their photos to iMovie to add background music and sound effect. More movies can be found under Technology link above.

Learning Goals: The students will apply the following media skills:

  • Story boarding
  • Animation production techniques
  • Filming the animation
  • Using animation software to animate and edit their film: Stop motion animation and imovie
  • Collaborating on pre-planning, production and animation screening
  • Critiques (peer review) of others work
  • Present their narrated animations for a class critique.
